There is so much confusion surrounding a diagnosis of IBS. Often suggested treatment can be vague and leave you feeling even more confused...

Effective IBS treatment does not need to be so complex if you know where to focus and when to investigate further.

What is IBS?

IBS is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that affects 1 in 7 people. It's characterised by a cluster of symptoms which indicate that the digestive system is not functioning properly. IBS is an umbrella term used to describe a broad set os symptoms and an IBS diagnosis alone, does not necessarily help us to specifically address the cause.

What are the symptoms? Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, alternative bouts of constipation/diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal distention, excessive gas and/or urgency to move your bowels.

IBS testing options

Our biggest priority is identifying what the underlying cause of your 'IBS' really is. By asking the right questions during an initial consult we can narrow down our focus, arriving at the most appropriate tests. We refer clients for a mixture of mainstream blood tests as well as offer functional pathology testing which includes SIBO breath testing and more comprehensive gut microbiome stool testing.

"IBS is not a final diagnosis, it's a starting point. After structural gut issues have been ruled out we can start to explore where things are going wrong with the function of your gut."

Common causes of IBS

  1. Gut hypersensitivity - often from excessive stress/anxiety

  2. Poor diet - excessive alcohol, sugar, caffeine, processed foods

  3. Gut microbiome imbalance - overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, fungi, parasites

  4. Leaky gut - inflamed gut lining

  5. Altered gut motility - movement

  6. Altered gut secretions - insufficient gastric acid, pancreatic enzymes, bile

  7. Gastrointestinal infection

Quick tips for IBS

Avoid trigger foods (following a temporary low FODMAP diet can be very helpful) with guidance of your health care practitioner. Interestingly, clinical trials have found that 3 out of 4 individuals with IBS found relief or improvement in symptoms after following the low FODMAP diet. Aim to eat simple, cooked and soft foods which are easier on your gut to breakdown and digest. Take stress management seriously - the brain and gut communicate with each other very closely.

IBS Treatment Adelaide: are all cases treated the same?

Every BODY is different and every case of IBS presents differently, so the treatment approach for many of my clients with IBS varies greatly too. Usually IBS is not just isolated to the digestive tract, there are often many other body systems involved. On the whole, Naturopathic treatment will involve the use of targeted nutritional and/or herbal supplements with the long term goal to eventually ween off of all supplements and maintain your improved digestive health through lifestyle and dietary modifications.
